“Now you’re just crazy”: Stories for Nonprofit Fundraising

· November 14, 2025 ·

Did you know that when we hear a story, neural activity in our brains increases fivefold? Every so often, I hear a story that grabs my attention…and my heart. So it was with Emmanuel Molefi. (Related: Check out my LinkedIn post on ghostwriting.}

The story, in brief:

More than a decade ago, Emmanuel had been living at a children’s home in Botswana, where staff identified him as a gifted student. He won a prestigious educational scholarship, becoming the first in his family to graduate from high school. That alone would have been an achievement. He wasn’t done. Next was an undergrad degree at a UK university, then a PhD in computational neurology, exploring what math can tell us about brain disorders. I worked with Emmanuel to tell this implausible story. The piece became the basis of a fundraising campaign with a call-to-action for donors to support an orphan-and-vulnerable-children scholarship fund so more “Emmanuels” might illuminate our world. [Watch this space for results…our campaign is still underway!]

Excerpt:
“If you told me years ago that I’d attend a world-class school, earn top marks in my [exams], I’d have said, ‘Doubtful.’ If you predicted that I’d attend university anywhere – much less overseas – I’d have said, ‘Not possible.’ If you suggested that I’d be writing to you now with ‘Dr.’ in front of my name, I’d have declared…, ‘Now you’re just crazy.’ And yet, all of this has come to pass.”

Working with Jennifer was an absolute
pleasure. She’s an exceptionally talented writer and editor, and her insightful guidance and meticulous attention to detail brought my story to life in ways I hadn’t imagined. I’m beyond grateful for her terrific support in shaping and sharing my narrative.

If you’re in the vicinity of reliable news these days, you may have noticed some grim headlines. Our world is churning with conflict. And so it was that I relished learning how global peacebuilders in twenty countries pursue effective approaches to “transformative” reconciliation, even in the most dire of circumstances. For this developmental editing project — where I focused on structure, flow, and language — I paired my training and experience in conflict resolution with my wordsmithing skills to strengthen a long-form cited manuscript co-authored by two experts in the field. This is take-heart material that we all need. Full project here; sample pages below.

Policy Paper: All in the Details

· January 26, 2022 ·

An Iraqi institute had completed a lengthy report with multiple authors, hundreds of footnotes, and an earnest message on the topic of displaced people. The client needed a comprehensive edit prior to a launch event for a range of government stakeholders. I edited for structure, clarity, word choice, flow, and consistent Arabic treatment. I formatted and verified citations, checked translation where appropriate, and recommended infographics to improve reader comprehension.

Below are some samples from that piece. (Full report available, along with another report in a quarterly series for which I was also contracted.)

Jennifer has worked with us on a number of reports, all of which require attention to a lot of terminology and references specific to our region of operation (the Middle East). I can say without hesitation that she has become an essential contributor to our work. She’s very rigorous and adjusts her approach according to the needs of the different foundations and funders that support our research. I’ve recommended her to other clients and they have also come away satisfied.
